Dear JICS Families,
Coffee & Conversation
The JICS Parent Education Committee has wonderful ideas about new ways to share information about our pedagogy and understanding with parents. This Monday, October 2 at 8:50am, we are hosting our first (drop-in) parent “Coffee & Conversation”. Join us for some coffee and an opportunity to hear a bit about the JICS approach to introducing Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night” that has been used in Grades 2 to 6 this week. *Bring your own “JICS mug” or purchase it from the Parents’ Association at the event! (We will have back up cups, too.). This "standing event" will take place outside in front of the front entrance of the school. Thanks to the PA for providing the coffee!
Rainy River Trip
Carol Stephenson, Zoe Donoahue and I will travel to Fort Francis on Tuesday and be away until Friday. We are honoured that the Rainy River District School Board, Seven Generations Education Institute and The Robertson Program have invited us to take part in the conference: Indigenous Knowledge and Mathematics – Responding to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action. Zoe and Carol were asked to present their research on using pentominoes to support the development of spatial reasoning in Mathematics. I will share on our new initiative – the soon to be published resource for educators “Natural Curiosity 2nd Edition: A Resource for Educators -The Importance of Indigenous Perspectives in Children's Environmental Inquiry” written by Doug Anderson, Lorraine Chiarotto, and Julie Comay.
Curriculum Night
It was wonderful to see so many of you at the Curriculum Night last night for Nursery to Grade 2 classes. As partners with parents sharing the goals of providing the best learning experiences for students, the teachers and I feel it is important for you to know what we teach and how we teach.
Next week, Thursday, October 5, is our Grade 3 - Grade 6 Curriculum Night, 6:00-7:30PM. Please RSVP with Holly for babysitting: holly.huizenga@utoronto.ca The deadline to RSVP is Monday. We cannot accept RSVP's after this date because we need to ensure an appropriate ratio for babysitting and pizza.
