1. Parents’ Association Meeting & Parent Ed Event – Oct 28
All JICS parents are encouraged to attend the first PA meeting of the year on Monday, October 28, 6:00pm in Room 363. This is your opportunity to learn about the PA financials, this year’s PA goals, fundraising efforts, and a report from Principal, Richard Messina which will include information about UofT’s new 2020-2021 JICS tuition payment schedule.
Following the PA Parent Meeting, join us for the Parent Education Event: Student Well-Being with JICS French and Wellness teacher, Christel Durand and JICS Social Worker, Laura Gordin 7:00-8:30pm in Room 363. Learn about what JICS is doing to improve student mental health, why this is important, and what you can do.
Babysitting provided from 6:00pm RVSP
2. Girls’ Basketball Team
The JICS Girls’ Basketball Team has begun practicing. These Grade 5 and Grade 6 girls meet in the gym Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 8:05 with coaches Ben Peebles, Michael Martins, Nadia Dharsee, Christel Durand, and Marcia Bumbury. They will have an opportunity to compete in the TDESSA (Toronto District Elementary South Sports Association) tournaments.
3. Diwali Dancers
Thank you to the children who have signed up for Diwali dance practice and to JICS parent/choreographer, Saumya! The rehearsals begin tomorrow at 8:00am. We are looking forward to their performance at our assembly on October 24!
4. Proper Footwear for Phys Ed
A note from Nadia: Having appropriate athletic shoes is very important when participating in Phys Ed. They offer good support for the spine and hips, and provide a stable, secure surface. Performing in shoes like flip flops, crocs, boots, makes it easier for a student to fall because of the unsteady sole of the shoe. If you wear a different kind of shoe (other than athletic shoes) to school then be sure to pack your PE shoes in your back pack! More information about our Phys Ed program will be sent soon to parents via classroom teachers.
5. United Way Campaign
Did you know that you can contribute to JICS through your corporate United Way campaign? Many companies will double your impact by matching your donation dollar-for-dollar. Please consider allocating some or all of your corporate donations to JICS PA during this year’s campaign. The JICS PA is registered as the “St. George’s School’s Parents Association” for historic reasons. You should just need the charity name and number to donate. Please contact Deepta Rayner if you experience any trouble donating through your employer. Charitable Information: The St. George's School's Parents Association Reg #119175537RR0001
6. Note from Trash Team
Dear Jackman ICS Families,
October 21st – 25th is Waste Reduction Week and JICS is challenging you to participate. We invite you to reduce (or eliminate) the amount of waste that shows up in lunches and snacks such as single-use plastics from yogurt containers, packaging from granola bars, etc.
The hot lunch program has been really successful. The children have choice in the amounts of food they wish to eat resulting in very little organic waste and zero garbage. We challenge parents who send lunches and snacks to provide options that will not require items to be thrown out.
Starting on Monday, October 21st, the lunchroom will only have a compost bin available. Children will be required to take home all other items that are brought in their lunch.
We want you to refuse single use plastics, rethink ways we can package our lunches/snacks, and reduce the amount of waste that we bring to school. We hope these practices will stretch beyond the week, but it is a good place to start!
