2. JICS Read-a-thon - Celebrating 31 Years!

March is a special month for the JICS Library! This year marks the 31st annual READ-A-THON Fundraiser! Read-a-thon forms will be sent home soon. Students are encouraged to set personal reading goals, read each day, and collect pledges for their efforts. Funds collected at the end of the month will go toward replacing lost and broken books, purchasing new books, and supporting authors, illustrators, and storytellers to visit with students.

We are so grateful to our supportive community! Donations of $25 or more will be rewarded with a personalized book plate placed in a new library book.

3. JICS Winter Edition Newsletter

At JICS, we believe in fostering a strong partnership with parents by providing abundant information. That is why we offer weekly or biweekly teacher class-specific summary emails, Thursday's Parent Information Posts, First Term and Final report cards, parent-teacher interviews/meetings, and more.

Our JICS Newsletter serves as a window into the wider school experiences, offering insights you might not have come across otherwise. A special thanks to Krista for her dedicated work in publishing it! Crafted to be enjoyed by both parents and children, we highly recommend taking a peek at the captivating Winter Newsletter together.

To access the Winter Newsletter, use the password provided in the Parent Information Post email. It's a fantastic opportunity to share and explore together!

5. Message from Toronto Public Health - Measles Vaccines

Graphic reads “Travelling for March Break? Stay up-to-date with your measles vaccines before you go.” _with dose recommendations based on age.

Travelling for March Break? Measles is just a plane ride away.

Measles continues to spread in many parts of the world and in Canada. If you are planning to travel over March Break, get the best protection for you and your loved ones by staying up-to-date with your routine vaccines, including the measles vaccine.

These vaccines are available from your health care provider or at a walk-in clinic.

If you are unsure of your child’s vaccination status, check their yellow card (Ontario Immunization Record), TPH’s Immunization Connect Ontario (ICON) or by speaking with their primary health care provider.

To learn more, visit toronto.ca/immunization. Questions? Contact TPH at publichealth@toronto.ca or 416-338-7600, Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for more information. Service is available in multiple languages.

6. Black History Month

Everyone enjoyed the special school-wide events we planned for Black History Month: storyteller Kesha Christie engaging students from Nursery to Grade 6 with the rich tradition of oral storytelling and Yolanda T. Marshall, an award-winning Canadian author of Guyanese and Bajan heritage, presenting her vibrant, inclusive children’s literature. Throughout the year and especially in February, each class and many specialty classes have engaged the students in lessons that honour the legacy of Black Canadians, past and present.

7. Natural Curiosity - Stories of Action

Natural Curiosity is honoured to be a part of “Stories of Action”, a series highlighting the finalists from Climate Justice Resilience Fund's first-ever global open call, which saw 175 organizations apply, leading to 24 finalists and 4 grant recipients. This initiative seeks to amplify impactful climate justice efforts and celebrate the ongoing work being done around the world to advance climate justice.

8. Natural Curiosity

The Natural Curiosity program plays a crucial role in advancing the Lab School’s public purpose by supporting educators with understanding the importance of Indigenous perspectives in environmental and all education.

Help Natural Curiosity support 30,000 educators in 2025 by donating just $20 today!

Every donation, no matter the size, helps educators bring environmental learning to life through Indigenous perspectives, empowering students to imagine a better world and take the steps necessary to make that world a reality.

As a 100% donor-funded program, your support is essential to providing free resources and expanding environmental education and Indigenous language programs for all. The Government of Canada has extended the eligible period for charitable donations—contribute by February 28th and receive a 2024 tax receipt.

Miigwetch/Hiy hiy/Nya:wen for considering a gift to Natural Curiosity.
