4. Hot Dog Night
We are hoping that a cherished JICS annual tradition will return this Spring. Hot Dog Night is the JICS family outdoor celebration in the playground, with simple but good food, drink, an opportunity for children to play and for parents and teachers to connect. After a 2 year absence, this social event has never been more necessary: marking a return to normal and rebuilding the strong community spirit that we value so highly and work hard to maintain. The event is completely dependant on parent volunteers. Traditionally, it has been organized by Grade 1 parents. This year, we are extending the call to parents in Grade 1, 2, and 3 to ensure we will be able to host the event. Of course, we welcome parents from all grades as well. We have the approval from UofT and need to meet next week to begin to plan and seek the necessary permits.
Please contact richard.messina@utoronto.ca to volunteer.
What: community celebration with food, beer/wine for adults, games for children.
Feels like: a backyard barbeque with low-key, fun games for children to play.
Who: all JICS families and teachers
Where: Lab School playground
When: Spring (school night) date TBD, 6:00 –8:00 pm
Need: Parent Volunteers to organize – contact richard.messina@utoronto.ca
5. Eyd e Shoma Mobarak!
It truly was thrilling welcoming parent visitors into the SK classroom last week to help the children mark the Iranian New Year. Many thanks to parent-volunteers for coming in, explaining the elements of the beautiful heft-seen table, and bringing us a new class pet – an as of yet unnamed beta fish! The SKs also read a story, shared out henna tattoos, and received bracelets.
6. Ramadan Kareem!
This week, the SKs had stories, pictures, music, drumming, delicious dates, together creating a joyful sense of how Ramadan is celebrated and why thanks to the support of parent volunteers. Each child was presented with a lantern, or a Fanous Ramadan, traditionally used to decorate streets and homes in the month of Ramadan. It made for a very exciting day! At the JICS Lab School, we are enjoying welcoming parent back into classrooms to enrich our learning.
7. JICS Read-a-thon
The annual JICS Library fundraiser has come to a very successful end. So far, we have raised $762 in online donations!! The deadline for donations and completed forms is April 15th, 2022. Thank you for your support and donations! Your donations will be used to replace lost and broken books, purchasing new books, and supporting authors, illustrators and storytellers to visit with students. If you have not had a chance to make your donation, please see the following links:

8. Parent Education
March 31, 2022 | 12:30-1:30pm
If you missed the “Lunch & Learn” Pathways to Positive Masculinity - Raising Boys with a Healthy Understanding of Masculinity with Denia Anderson, MSW Candidate, on March 31, you can view it on the Parent Education page.
9. Parents' Association Contributions to the Lab School
Your donation to the PA supports the school in many ways. Here is an example of your donations at work:
We are so excited to bring Korxx blocks into the common areas of our school building! These blocks are made of sustainably harvested cork, a material which provides a unique, quiet, non-slippery surface to build with. Children - and adults - of all ages can create and build with these blocks. We have chosen spots around our school so that all the grades can access these materials. We hope that when people walk around our building and see these beautiful blocks they will know that creativity, design, and play are at the heart of the learning in our school.
